Suzuki Jimny & Sierra 2018

Two Japanese-market bodies share a name family, but the kei Jimny and wider Sierra are different choices.

Manufacturer-based generation guide · no stock implied

Start with
the right car.

Suzuki launched its redesigned Jimny and Jimny Sierra in Japan on 5 July 2018. The domestic Jimny is a 0.66-litre turbo kei vehicle; the Japanese-market Jimny Sierra is the wider compact model with a 1.5-litre engine. Suzuki's launch table lists part-time four-wheel drive and either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic options. A UK-delivered Jimny is not automatically a used Japanese import.

01

Choose the body, not just the badge

The kei Jimny and Sierra have different body dimensions and engines. Ask for exact model and engine evidence; a photograph cropped around the grille will not settle the distinction.

02

Match the gearbox to your driving

Suzuki's 2018 Japanese table includes manual and automatic versions of both. Confirm the actual transmission and drive controls before comparing usability and insurance.

03

Be honest about intended use

The compact body and part-time 4WD can be valuable for particular terrain, but examine everyday passengers, luggage and motorway use on a test drive. Do not infer towing capacity from the model's rugged image.

Check the build date, Japanese grade, chassis/type code and fitted equipment. No engine, seating, drive or feature should be copied into a vehicle advert without matching evidence.

Turn research
into proof.

Use the guide to ask precise questions about a real car. Review its records and inspect the actual vehicle before a buying decision.

  1. Confirm Jimny or Jimny Sierra, engine, transmission and whether the individual car was UK-supplied or imported.
  2. Inspect chassis and underbody condition, corrosion and any off-road damage or modifications.
  3. Check transfer controls, tyres and service records on the actual vehicle.
  4. Seek model-specific insurance and UK compliance guidance before committing.

Say whether the kei size or Sierra's wider body solves your use case, manual or automatic preference, and what terrain and road mileage the car must cover.
